Ruby Falls, Lookout Mountain

We give advice that can be useful at two times: (1) when you are borrowing money from a subprime lender and want to avoid one that uses predatory practices and (2) what to do when foreclosure looms. However, there is often a need for additional advice at other times. Housing counselors serve this purpose.

For advice from a truly nonprofit source, there is no substitute for a certified consumer credit counselor. The National Foundation for Credit Counseling can help you locate the right person at the right organization.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development maintains a listing of HUD-approved housing counseling agencies. They can give you advice on buying a home, renting, defaults, foreclosures, credit issues and reverse mortgages. Just go to Approved Housing Counseling Agencies or call (800) 569-4287.

If you or your counselor want to obtain information from the company to which you send payments, you may need the information request forms we offer.
